Was this a wrong way to handle the situation at a business dinner?

Question by 媽er!: Was this a wrong way to handle the situation at a business dinner?
I was invited to a business dinner and it was one of those fancy dinners where your table etiquette is to be tested, but I only learned this after the fact. The restaurant was a fusion restaurant and I noticed that the waiter and several of the staff spoke in a Chinese dialect that was from where I studied when I lived in China. I laughed at a joke one told to the other, and after just a sentence or two I asked for a special dish from their province which wasn’t on the menu. My dish came and the waiter removed all of my cutlery and replaced it with chopsticks. So I ate the whole dish with chopsticks and drank a cup of special tea that came in a special cup canister thing. Unknowingly, I had skipped the whole test that goes with knowing what to do with which knives, forks, bread, dessert, and wine, and this was important to them, I sort of found out later.

So, was it a big deal that I did this, or just a little unexpected?

That’s what they get for springing a Western dinner etiquette test on you in an Eastern fare restaurant. I’d have to say you called their bluff…and showed them up.

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 15×10-inch jelly roll pan. Line with waxed paper. Grease paper.
2. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
3. Beat together sugar and egg yolks at high speed until light and fluffy. At low speed, alternately beat milk and flour mixture into egg mixture.
4. Using clean beaters, beat egg whites at high speed until stiff, but not dry, peaks form. Fold one third of beaten whites into batter. Fold in remaining whites. Spread batter in prepared pan; smooth top.
5. Bake cake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) until set, 12 minutes.
6. Dust a clean cloth with confectioners’ sugar. Turn cake out onto prepared cloth. Remove waxed paper. Trim cake edges. Starting with a long side, roll up cake, jelly-roll style. Transfer, seam-side down, to a wire rack to cool for 30 minutes.
7. Unroll cake; remove cloth. Spread whipped cream over cake to within 1 inch of edges. Re-roll cake. Place, seam-side down, on serving plate.
8. To prepare frosting, in a small saucepan, bring heavy cream, melted chocolate, and butter to a boil over medium heat, stirring vigorously until blended. Remove from heat. Let stand until set. Spread frosting over top and sides of cake.
9. To prepare garnish, dust work surface with confectioners’ sugar. Knead food coloring into marzipan until blended. Using a rolling pin dusted with confectioners’ sugar, roll marzipan to a 1/8-inch thickness. Using a small knife, cut out leaves. Arrange leaves, cinnamon candies, and snowmen on top of cake and around plate. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Enjoy!

Two suggestions for you and it would be a good idea to check out their web sites, especially Rules as this is a fabulous place, it’s the London’s oldest Restaurant and really is great inside, their food is good as well. Their Cocktail Bar is upstairs and you will find photos on their site. Check out all the people who have written about Rules over the last 200 odd years. This is a place to be remembered forever. You can get Steak here or Rib of Beef and champagne, also a chance to check out the menu first and the drinks list.
Just heard that Rules Bar has been voted as one of the World’s 50 best Bars.
Rules Restaurant & Bar
35 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7LB
Tel for reservations. You will need to do so, but let them know it is a 21st

Gaucho is more modern but they really can cook a great Steak and their Wine and Champagne is well chosen. The 4 floored restaurant is next to the ‘Cavas De Gaucho’ with a ground floor wine bar and top floor ‘supper lounge’ with live music and entertainment till late. You won’t forget the decor in a place like this gets busy so book early. There web site also lets you check the menus and drinks prices before you go. This one is the nearest to Leicester Square about 5 minutes walk.

Gaucho – Piccadilly

I hope you both have a fabulous time and really enjoy your special celebration. Cheers

Here’s what I remember:

They tend to favor items for breakfast like: Museli/Granola type cereals, fruit, cheeses/deli meats, hearty breads, coffee/tea/juice, hardboiled eggs, maybe a porridge/oatmeal of some type & pastries.

Cannot say what they’d like for lunch or dinner because I had traditional German food all the time but I was in Berlin). I had things like: Brussel sprouts, potatoes with quark ( a German style sour cream), apple based desserts, smoked pork chops, braised red cabbage.
